The 23rd WFHSS World Sterilization Congress took place from 16 to 19 November 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. The event brought together sterilization and medical device reprocessing professionals, researchers, and managers from different countries.
I attended as President of JAM Sterilization Research Institute and Iran’s representative in the World Federation for Hospital Sterilisation Sciences. My scientific poster, Future of Sterilization Indicators, was presented as part of the congress scientific programme.
The study examined the future of sterilization indicators through an interdisciplinary perspective. It considered the contribution of biology, chemistry, electronics, electrical engineering, mechanics, physics, and computer science to the next generation of sterilization monitoring systems.
The poster proposed that future indicators should be more reliable, faster, more economical, easier to interpret, and simpler to document. It also highlighted the need to integrate indicators with computer-based traceability systems so healthcare facilities can improve process quality and reduce cycle costs.
A central theme was the growing role of the Internet of Things and data analysis in sterile services departments. These developments may reshape CSSD teams and make digital, engineering, and data-analysis skills increasingly important for future professionals.
Presenting this poster provided an opportunity to discuss a forward-looking approach to sterilization monitoring with international specialists. It also supported the international visibility of JAM Sterilization Research Institute and Iran’s scientific contribution to the global sterilization community.
